 French Louis style mirror, handcrafted in Yorkshire Guilded in Dutch Leaf THE FRENCH LOUIS MIRROR This design is classic Louis Philippe, King of France, the reign of who overlapped with that of Queen Victoria in England. The original was made circa 1880 and has within its design combinations of all the classic motifs of a Louis mirror, a fabulously elaborate crest featuring a central rococo shell motif surrounded by a garland of flowers that almost overflows the top of the frame in its exuberance. The body of the frame has a simple yet pretty, delicate floral etching flowing around it that is typical of a frame of this era Our copy the Louis has the extra detail of the fine hairline cracks in the gesso that have appeared as part of the patina of the piece and only serve to enhance its appearance and sense of originality. |
